Temple Of Poseidon

Dominating the Athenian skyline, this beautiful, world-renowned monument is dedicated to Goddess Athena, the virgin patron of Athens. The destroying consequences of the Persian campaign at 480 BC, lead Athenians to the desire of constructing a memorable temple in 438 B.C. by Ictinus & Callicrates, under the supervision of Phidias, which is considered to be the most important surviving monument of the ancient world. Parthenon which is the most brilliant construction during the Golden Age (5th BC) of Pericles, stands as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece & the Athenian Democracy. Its’ metops & pediments representations depict scenes from the Ancient Greek mythology; Parthenon is regarded to be the most eminent landmark of Greek history & culture.

Temple Of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon was dedicated to the god of the sea Poseidon. Located at Cape Sounion, in the southeast tip of the Attica peninsula, 45 miles from Athens approachable via a coastal route that resembles the French Riviera, is considered to be constructed at 440 BC. However, prominent personalities of the history, like Homer & Herodotus, are referred to Sounion as a worship place centuries before. Surrounded by the sea at three sides, the Temple observes the Aegean sea discerned in the horizon, as Aegeas did, looking for his son Thisseus, several centuries before, according to mythology. Landmark of the temple is the inscribed name of the romantic poet Lord Byron in the base of the column.

The pass of Thermopylae is the historical site of the battle that took place in 480 B.C. between the Greeks & the Persians. Under the command of King Leonidas of Sparta, the greatly outnumbered Greek army remained in the pass to prevent Xerxes’ vast cavalry & infantry force further invading the land. They held ground for three days before being outflanked via a hidden goat path, which according to legend, was shown to the Persians by a traitor named Ephialtes. However, their feat gave the Greek army enough time to reassemble & successfully combat the Persians in following battles.
The epigram on the monuments reads:
Oh stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians (Spartans), that here we lie, obedient to their words.

“Private Tour of the Peloponnese - Historical and Mythological Greece”

SUMMARY: When one is searching the internet for products or services, particularly in a foreign country, one is often apprehensive. I am here to tell you that I found Hellenic Private Tours (aka: H.P. Tours), Athens Greece to be a wonderful, reliable, reasonably priced, and ethical group to work with. The product they provide is exactly as they promise. It is FIRST QUALITY and is delivered by enthusiast, knowledgeable drivers.

DETAILS: My wife and I traveled in Europe in June 2015 and spent a considerable amount of time in Greece. We wanted a tour guide company that would show us the Peloponnese peninsula and adjoining area around Delphi. Several months before our scheduled departure, I found H.P. Tours’ website based on a referral from a stateside travel agent ( As I said, I was apprehensive about contracting with a foreign firm for services; therefore, our first e-mail transactions were quite legalistic and detailed. Specifically, my wife and I wanted a private or small group tour with a guide who spoke both fluent Greek (we spoke none) and fluent English. We are in our 60s and have some mobility issues. We are interested in historical and mythological Greece. I asked them to provide a series of options that would fit into our available time envelope. Also, I am a train enthusiast and wanted to experience some unique Greek rail operation as an add-on attraction. I also wanted to include in the agreement pick-up services at the cruise ship terminal and also transportation to the Athens airport. In addition, I asked recommendations for appropriate hotels in our price range.

Mr. Frank Kotsiopoulos, the Managing Director of H.P. Tours, was quick to respond with several available options and a price list. We negotiated a mutually agreeable package price to be paid in cash at the time of arrival. He also explained his very reasonable cancelation policy should we encounter unforeseen complications. I felt the price was fair and equitable for the advertised package, but – being the eternal skeptic that I am – was curious what quality tour we would receive.

What later impressed me the most was that Frank found an error in my plans that was much to his favor and would have caused me considerable embarrassment; however, instead of letting it ride (which was in his financial best interest) he alerted me to the situation, and we reworked the plan. The new itinerary was less expensive, so I insisted that he keep the pre-agreed to contracted price. He refused – saying that he preferred to provide the service at a reasonable price and also make a friend.

When we arrived, Frank was there to meet us. The vehicle was a new Mercedes Benz. On the way to our hotel he gave us a wonderful driving tour. On the following day we met our driver, Valerois (Val) who would prove to be very personable, an expert driver, a knowledgeable guide, and a friend. Long story short – the tour of the Peloponnese was superb. We visited sites in Corinth, ancient Epidaurus, Sanctuary of Asclepius and the ancient theatre, Nafplion, Olympia – site of the original Olympic Games, Delphi – site of the Delphic Oracle, Diakofto to Kalavrita cog railway, and the Monastery of Hosios Loukas. The hotels were first class, comfortable, and reasonably priced. The restaurants recommended were outstanding, the food delicious, and we received preferential treatment as guests of H.P. Tours.

RECOMMENDATION: Do not go to Greece without contacting Frank Kotsiopoulos at H.P. Tours (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Frank & Val – Thanks for the memory!

“Private Minibus Tour of Athens”

We arranged a private tour of Athens with H.P.Tours based on the Trip advisor reviews and we are so glad that it had as we had an awesome day in Athens. Frank picked us on time and drove us straight to Acropolis in order to beat the crowds. He drove us at the Temple of Zeus, the Panathinaic Stadium, the changing of the guards, Lycabettus Hill and Plaka. He then took us to an excellent authentic restaurant for lunch. We had plenty of time at all the other sites he took us to and was always waiting exactly as planned when we were finished. We even managed a little bit of shopping in Plaka. We were deposited in plenty of time back at the cruise terminal. Frank was very knowledgeable. Being in the extremely comfortable, fully air-conditioned and smoke free minibus made our one day in Athens worth visiting. I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Of all the days in port we had this was possibly our favorite.

“Perfect tour!”

I joined the half day tour to Cape Sounion with Hellenic Private Tours. Prior to the tour, Frank has been really responsive and helpful in answering my emails. As we wanted to see the famous sunset at Temple of Poseidon, Frank kindly suggested a pick-up time so that we can arrive Sounion on time to see the sunset.

On our way from Athens to Sounion, Frank told us a lot about Greek history and mythology, which is very interesting. On our way to Sounion, one of our friends got car sick (definitely not Frank's problem, the drive was very stable and enjoyable). We were impressed by how caring Frank was - he checked if my friend was ok from time to time, and did whatever he can to make her feel better. We feel like he truly cared about his customers.

The drive itself was very pleasant as well, and Frank made a few stops for us to take photos of the magnificent view.

After the tour, Frank drove us to a restaurant for dinner. The food was delicious and prices were reasonable.

I highly recommend everyone to book a tour with Frank - responsible, caring, and a fun person to travel with - we feel like we were travelling with a friend rather than a driver/tour guide.

Thank you very much for the perfect experience!

“Awesome service!”

My first contact with Frank was several months before our trip to Greece, and I was immediately impressed by Frank's incredibly quick and helpful responses. I was even more impressed when he took us on a day long tour of Athens. He is knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and he truly wants to provide the best experience possible for his clients. We had two other associates of Frank look after two other tours, and Thasos and Chris provided the same high level of service, along with a lot of laughs! We also used Hellenic for all 4 of our airport transfers. Frank and his team are terrific!

“Perfect Tour of Athens & Cape Sounion”

We contacted Frank after reading the wonderful reviews on his company and right from the start, he was prompt, friendly, informative, and professional. He quickly helped us pick out and reserve the right itinerary for our 1 day cruise stop.

Once we arrived in Athens (Piraeus), Frank's associate, Chris, was right there to meet us as soon as we exited the port area. Chris was a fantastic driver and provided us with great information on the sites we were seeing, as well as various explanations or descriptions of typical Greek life and culture.

We selected the full-day Athens and Cape Sounion tour and were not disappointed. Not only did we see everything on the itinerary, we ALWAYS beat the organized ship tours and often found the sites uncrowded so we were able to enjoy them without the normal hassle and frustration felt with popular tourist sites. I was very pleased with this particular aspect. Chris was always right there, waiting for us after we finished our tour of the sites. He never rushed us and always asked if we wanted more time.

Overall, I was extremely pleased with our experience with Hellenic Private Tours. One point of our tour actually overlapped with one that Frank was running so he made it a point to come over and introduce himself, which I found to be very professional. I would definitely book this tour again and have already recommended it to others.

“Super satisfied!”

Just before we travelled to Athens I tried to find some options what to do in Athens. That's how I have found Frank and his company on the internet and the many good recommendations. So, I thought, I would try it if there are so many satisfied clients.
He immediately answered to my email request with many possible options on what sort of trips we can do. First we agreed they would pick us up at the airport.
His companion, David came for us and waited with our name sign and brought us to our hotel. During the driving Frank called and we agreed to have one of the tours he mentioned in the email (the full day Athens and Sounion).
David came for us on the day agreed and we had a marvellous day together! We wanted to make nice photos during sunset, so we started the tour later in the morning - and this wasn't a problem for them.
We had a very good lunch in a local taverna where we met Frank :). Food, service was great and the price was reasonable. After lunch we spent some hours on the beach too at a beautiful place. We have seen the sunset in Sounion at the Temple of Poseidon where we could make good photos. On the way back to the hotel we had a dinner together, we wanted to eat souflaki. David found a place for us and it was perfect.
David did all his best to tell us and show us everything we wanted. He was so friendly during the tour that we felt like being with a friend who takes us everywhere rather than a guide.
Thank you very much for this day David, it was so good, we never forget it! :) - Erika L.

“Excellent Athens tour!”

Hellenic Private Tours was the perfect way to see all of the main sites in Athens in just one day. Frank made the booking process super simple, and our driver David was fantastic. We enjoyed every aspect of our day, from the timely airport pick up to being dropped off at our hotel. My personal favorite was the restaurant that David selected for our lunch. He assisted us in the ordering process, and we ended up having one of the best, most authentic meals we'd had during our entire trip. I would enthusiastically recommend Hellenic Private Tours to friends looking to see and do as much as possible in Athens.

“Full day tour whilst on a cruise”

Wrote to Frank after reading the excellent reviews. He responded within a few minutes and booked a full day tour whilst on a cruise.

Takis was waiting for us at Piraeus and he was simply great. I would recommend having lunch at their selected restaurant as the Greek food was unbelievable.

A big thank you to Frank and Takis

“Excellent communication, unable to review tour”

Disclosure: This is for Frank's excellent responsiveness and communication, and pricing.

Due to personal issues I was unable to book with Frank. I was looking to do a two day tour of Delphi/Meteora and Frank had the best price quote and was very responsive. He was very willing to accommodate, and was very understanding when in the end I could not book with him.

“Excellent Service and Hospitality”

Frank arranged for transfers from the port, 4 days of tours in Greece and transfers to the airport for our family of 15. From my very first contact with Frank I was very impressed. I read the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to contact him by email. He responded within a very short period of time, even though it was very late in Greece, with a suggested schedule. It was very clear from the beginning that he wanted to make this a wonderful experience for our group. We ended up booking a half day tour to Cape Sounion, and then full day tours of Athens, Argos, and Delphi. Anna our tour guide for 3 of the 4 days was extremely knowledgeable and equally concerned about making the experience positive for all. We had quite a diverse age group ranging in age from 18 - 77 and when we asked to change the schedule to allow for beach time for the young adults in our group, they immediately came up with a plan that worked well for us all. We were all sad to say goodbye to Anna at the end of our third day and a little nervous that it would not be the same without her. While we definitely missed Anna on our last day, Christina our guide in in Delphi was also wonderful. She was part tour guide/part philosopher and kept the entire group thinking and engaged. We also were very happy with all of the restaurants that they selected for us. We could not have hoped for a better experience. Wonderful hospitality and great people!

Why should I prefer Frank Kotsiopoulos H.P.Tours - Hellenic Private Tours?

ITHACA [1910, 1911]

As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laestrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon-don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensation
touches your spirit and your body.
Laestrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon-you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope that your journey is a long one.
May there be many summer mornings when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors you’re seeing for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind-
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to learn and learn again from those who know.
Keep Ithaca always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so that you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaca to make you rich.
Ithaca gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her, you would have not set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaca won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you’ll have understood by then what these Ithaca’s mean.
